GB News Is Not News. It’s Opinion Masquerading as Journalism
Why GB News should be honest about what it really is — a right-wing opinion outlet, not impartial journalism.
GB News, on the other hand, does exactly that. It presents itself as a news channel, yet what it broadcasts day after day is anything but impartial journalism. It’s a steady stream of right-wing commentary, packaged in the visual and linguistic style of a traditional news outlet. But this is not news. This is opinion dressed as fact, and people are taking it as truth.
And that’s where the danger lies.
GB News is regulated by Ofcom, which requires “due impartiality” in news. But there’s a catch. By labelling most of its output as “current affairs” rather than “news,” they are allowed to present personal views. That includes monologues, political interviews with no balance, and programming led by figures like Nigel Farage or Jacob Rees-Mogg. It’s a loophole they rely on, but let’s be honest about what’s happening. This isn’t current affairs in any meaningful, journalistic sense. It’s a one-sided political platform airing under the trusted label of news.
Just take a look at their website. Scroll through it and see what jumps out. Anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) rhetoric, pro-Brexit stories, culture war distractions, all pointing in the same political direction. There is no balanced reporting here. And we know who’s funding this. We know who invested in GB News. These are the same people who poured money into the Leave campaign, who have backed right-wing causes, and who are now using a media platform to reinforce their worldview. This isn’t hidden. It’s all there if you look.
And yet people still tune in, not because it informs them, but because it tickles their fancy. It reinforces what they already believe. It tells them what they want to hear. And that’s not good for critical thinking. That’s not good for anyone who truly wants to understand the world around them in a deeper, more nuanced way. That’s not news. That’s brainwashing.
If GB News wants to be a right-wing opinion network, they should just call it that. Drop the word “news” and be honest with the public. “GB Views” would be more accurate. What they’re doing now is misleading. The public sees the word “news” and assumes what’s being shown has been verified, balanced, and held to a standard. But that’s not the case. Most of it is unchallenged commentary, full of sweeping generalisations and cultural grievances. It’s editorialised content, not journalism.
And here’s the point that too many overlook. Freedom of speech does not mean truth. Just because someone has the right to say something, it doesn’t mean what they’re saying is correct. What GB News is doing is using freedom of speech to inject bias into a space that is supposed to inform, not persuade. Their viewers trust them because they’re on TV with the word “news” stamped in the corner. That’s a dangerous misuse of public trust.
Meanwhile, people like me, who write blogs and personal pieces, are far more honest about what we are. I don’t pretend to be neutral. I don’t pretend to be an official source of public information. I’m just one person, writing what I believe, open to challenge, willing to reflect. And I don’t have a multi-million-pound broadcast licence or a studio behind me. It’s just me, my words, and the truth as I understand it. The irony is, I’m more transparent than they are.
So I ask again. Why is Ofcom allowing this to continue? How are they still classed as a news broadcaster? What GB News is doing is not news. It’s partisan opinion presented under the illusion of fact. And if we keep allowing this, the line between journalism and propaganda becomes harder and harder to see.
Let’s stop pretending. If it’s news, it should be balanced. If it’s opinion, say so. But don’t lie to the public by dressing one up as the other. That’s not freedom of speech. That’s manipulation.
